Hi.. I hate going to the dentist. I get huge anxiety attacks days before my appointment and the last appointment I actually vomited on the hygienist. I was so embarrassed. I don’t have the words for how embarrassed I was then. I hat ethe thought of going back to that dental office. I know the problems that can happen if I don’t go to the dentist and I need lots of cosmetic work done on my teeth. They look really bad right now. That;s the only reason I keep going to any dentist. Recent news stories have made me afraid to even go to a sleep dentist now. Nothing is safe any more. What can I do? – C.K.
C.K. – Your concern about the safety of sedation dentistry is understandable. If you are an anxious patient, then the thought of needing to be sedated can raise additional concerns.
In addition to finding a skilled cosmetic dentist, there are some things that you can before your next dental appointment to increase your comfort level.
- Find a gentle dentist with whom you are very comfortable.
- Ensure the dentist has training and credentials in sedation dentistry. Ask about his or her credentials and verify them.
- Make a list of your concerns and ask questions. If you are not satisfied with the response you get, let the dentist know. You may need to move on to another dentist.
- Ask about the office policy regarding monitoring you while are sedated.
- Before any dental treatment, ensure that you understand exactly what will take place.
