I am getting more and more nervous about getting my wisdom teeth out it will be the Tuesday after New Years and it’s being done without sedation. The oral surgeon says I don’t need it. Really? Why wouldn’t I need sedation? IS this normal? – Michael

Michael – Wisdom teeth are extracted with local anesthetic and often with some type of sedation. Nitrous oxide or IV sedation can be used.

If wisdom teeth are not impacted, a dentist may decide to use only local anesthetic. If you are nervous or anxious about the extractions, sedation may be useful to calm you and ensure that the experience is positive.

Speak with your oral surgeon about your concerns. If it makes you more comfortable, you can even request sedation.
