Can a snap on smile make your breath stink?

Hi. My sister got a snap on smile in September. She wears it every day all day and she sleeps in it. I think it’s sad. She doesn’t want to take it off because she hates her teeth and she is very self-conscious about them. My mom told her she needs braces but we don’t have money for braces and that made things even worse. I think that she has become sort of OCD about the snap on smile. Honestly, I haven’t seen her brush her teeth. So maybe that’s the real problem, but can the snap on smile make your breath stink because hers is really very strong? That’s going to cause a new problem that she will be embarrassed about. This is a bad cycle of problems. Thanks. Stephanie

Stephanie – It is thoughtful of you to be so concerned about your sister. The Snap-On Smile alone will not cause bad breath. If it is worn so much that good oral hygiene is neglected, strong breath odor will follow.

You might consider talking to your sister and letting her know that you understand her concerns about the appearance of her teeth. Gently let her know that her breath is developing a strong odor and that she may consider taking the Snap-On Smile off twice a day—long enough to thoroughly floss and brush her teeth, and to brush her tongue. It’s also important to rinse the Snap-On Smile with water and brush it with a soft toothbrush (not with toothpaste) to remove food debris. Your sister should speak with her dentist about how to properly clean the Snap-On Smile.

If the Snap-On Smile is worn all day, every day, it won’t last long. Depending on your sister’s or your family’s budget, it’s possible that she can find a dentist who can make braces or Invisalign affordable for her.
