Chipped tooth during dental cleaning?

I know it took a little more effort than usual to get my teeth clean because I had not been to a dentist in almost 3 yrs. The hygienist was super rough though. When I lived in Georgia I had a gentle dentist and hygienist that made cleaning my teeth seem like a breeze. During this cleaning, there was lots of bleeding and my gums were and are still sore. I got the cleaning 3 days ago. Since the cleaning, there seems to be more space between two of my teeth that I didn’t notice before. Is there a hairline chip or something that could have happened during the rough cleaning job? – Karin

Karin – It is likely that you experienced a lot of plaque and tartar buildup during the almost three years that you were without a dental cleaning. The process of trying to remove the buildup probably made the experience a little more rough than usual.

The removal of the buildup between your teeth can make previously existing spaces more noticeable. The deep cleaning that you received from the hygienist would not chip your teeth. If you are experiencing a lot of discomfort during a dental cleaning, it’s best to let the hygienist know. If you still suspect that a tooth is chipped, you can ask the dentist to examine your teeth for any signs of trauma.
