I got hit in the mouth with a soccer ball 2 weeks ago. I don’t have a regular dentist so we found one who had Saturday appointments and takes urgent care problems. He put something like a splint on my tooth to hold it in place so it would heal. I thought that a few days ago the tooth was getting dark but now I am certain. I am 19 yrs old. Is this going to heal or am I going to lose my tooth? Garrett

Garrett – You need to get back to the dentist promptly to have your tooth examined again. If it is discolored, it’s likely that the nerve and blood vessels in the tooth have died. When this occurs, a root canal treatment is required so that the tooth doesn’t have to be extracted.

If you need a root canal treatment, the tooth can be preserved with a porcelain crown. A cosmetic dentist will customize a crown to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth. People won’t be able to distinguish the crown from your natural teeth.

It’s important that you get help quickly. The sooner you get help, the easier it will be to restore your tooth.
